Murano Crescent New Build

In April 2009, work commenced on the Association’s largest ever development, for the provision of 140 new build flats, on the site of the former McGhee’s Bakery in Murano Street.  The site was acquired in 2007 from Kenmore Property Group who were unable to develop their proposals.  With revisions and improvements made to the original design, the Association was able to secure Grant funding to assist in the provision of a mixed tenure development with 98 flats for rent and 42 for Shared Equity.  All properties are designed to a high energy-efficient standard with the provision of off-street parking for all flats.

The Association’s proposals will see a 4 storey block of 32no. 2 & 3 bedrooms flats for rent in 4 tenement closes built on Murano Street.  These properties complete in late 2011.  The remaining flats will be built in a single 6–storey crescent-shaped block overlooking the Forth & Clyde Canal.  This block of 9 separate closes, including 4 closes incorporating the 42 flats being marketed for Shared Equity, will be predominately 2 bedroom flats, 18 of which will have ensuites, with a limited number of one bedroom flats.

All the flats in the larger block, which will have lift access, should enjoy remarkable views south over the city centre and West End, with anticipated completions in 2012.

The development of this new build site follows from the acquisition by the Association of 23 new built flats on an adjacent site from Kenmore Property in 2006.  Together with 5 private owners in these properties, this acquisition formed the first phase of the Association’s new development in Murano Street, which complements the improvement works previously carried out to the imposing sandstone tenements.
